CONCRETE SIDEWALKS & WALKWAYS:
Concrete walkways and sidewalks can provide homeowners and pedestrians with a safe, durable path to follow for many decades when properly built. However, the primary key to a long-lasting concrete pavement lies in the initial construction and attention to detail. If the contractor uses poor-quality materials, designs the pavement incorrectly, or fails to follow proper construction techniques, the sidewalk can begin to fail in just a few short years.
Your satisfaction with your new sidewalk or walkway starts with the contractor you choose. Hire an experienced contractor with a solid reputation, not necessarily the lowest bidder. Consider the contractor’s references, years of experience, the quality and maintenance of their equipment, the training and skill of the crew, and their standing in the local industry.
When installing new concrete, a responsible contractor will evaluate the type of soil where the sidewalk is to be built. Different soils react differently to moisture and temperature changes, which affects their load-bearing properties and overall stability. Based on this assessment, the contractor will plan to properly compact the soil and create a uniform, level subgrade to minimize differential settling and reduce the likelihood of cracking or heaving over time.

NEW CEMENT DRIVEWAYS:
They are known as concrete driveways or cement driveways; both terms refer to the same durable surface. Not that long ago, homeowners typically had only two driveway choices: concrete or asphalt. Today, however, concrete driveway options have expanded considerably to include stamped concrete driveways, colored concrete driveways, and a variety of decorative concrete finishes.
A decorative concrete driveway is an excellent way to enhance your property’s appearance, offering a more refined look that easily surpasses the plain, industrial appearance of asphalt. While plain gray concrete remains the most common selection for new driveways, more homeowners are recognizing the benefits of decorative options.
Whether you select a colored concrete driveway or opt for stamped concrete, you gain immediate curb appeal, and probably a few admiring (and slightly envious) looks from the neighborhood.

DECORATRIVE STAMPED CONCRETE:
Stamped concrete is an innovative, beautiful, and cost effective method to achieve the look of stone, brick, wood grain, or other natural materials. By mixing concrete with the appropriate coloring and applying large-scale rubber stamps, stamped concrete can replicate both the texture and color depth of the mimicked material to combine a realistic look with the ease and durability of concrete.
At CNX Concrete Construction, Inc., we've had extensive experience completing a variety of projects using proven stamped concrete methods. From large-scale floors and patios to pool decks, driveways, sidewalks, and walkways, our stamped concrete offers a beautiful and unique pavement option that's cheaper and more durable than natural stone, but more flexible and artistic than pre-made pavers or asphalt.

CONCRETE REPAIRS:
You ask, why does concrete crack? … Over time, carbonation can occur, during which concrete slowly absorbs carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. This initiates a chemical reaction because cement contains a significant amount of lime, producing more acidic conditions within the concrete. As a result, the embedded steel reinforcing bars can begin to corrode and expand, and the increased internal force eventually causes the concrete to crack.
This process can be checked with a pH scale indicator. Chlorides have been used to accelerate concrete setting, but they can leach calcium hydroxide and reduce overall strength, which in turn diminishes durability and can lead to premature failures. When water enters cracks, dissolved inorganic materials can be transported and deposited elsewhere, creating surface bumps or crusts. The leakage of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂) from cracks can promote the formation of calcareous deposits that resemble cave stalactites.
Structures exposed to seawater are particularly susceptible to accelerated erosion and corrosion. While bacteria generally have limited impact on most concrete, they can contribute to localized “crown-rot” corrosion in contaminated sewer or industrial waters. Earthquakes pose a severe threat to all buildings, and concrete structures can suffer significant loss of structural integrity during seismic events.
Finally, some cracking may result from poor installation, if an inexperienced contractor handled your concrete, improper mix, reinforcement, or finishing can lead to early issues.

CONCRETE STAINING:
Concrete staining is a specialized surface-finishing process used to enhance, alter, and permanently color cured concrete through chemical or water-based reactions that penetrate the substrate rather than simply coating it. Unlike paints or topical coatings that sit on the surface, concrete stains are designed to infiltrate the porous matrix of the concrete, creating a durable, UV-stable, and often variegated appearance that becomes part of the material itself.
At its core, concrete staining is a reactive or absorptive coloration system. The process relies on the natural porosity and mineral composition of concrete, primarily calcium hydroxide and other cementitious compounds, to achieve color transformation.

CONCRETE GRINDING:
Concrete grinding is a mechanical surface-preparation and correction process that uses industrial grinders equipped with diamond-segment abrasives to remove imperfections, level uneven slabs, and create a consistent surface profile, and it is absolutely critical from a safety standpoint in both residential and commercial environments.
Over time, concrete develops hazards such as trip points from heaving or settling, surface irregularities, coatings that have failed, or contaminants that reduce traction; grinding eliminates these defects by precisely shaving down high spots and opening the surface to a uniform plane. From a safety engineering perspective, this directly reduces slip-and-fall risks by improving surface texture (often increasing the coefficient of friction) and removing glossy or contaminated layers that can become dangerously slick, especially when wet. It also ensures proper adhesion for coatings, sealers, or overlays, without adequate grinding, these materials can delaminate, creating hidden hazards that worsen over time.
Additionally, grinding helps expose underlying structural issues such as cracks or weak surface laitance, allowing for proper repair before they evolve into more serious failures. In high-traffic zones like garages, warehouses, walkways, and commercial floors, this process is not just cosmetic, it is a form of preventative safety maintenance, ensuring the concrete performs as intended under load, remains compliant with safety standards, and minimizes liability by proactively addressing conditions that could lead to accidents or injuries.
